Trim Colour Series, No.6: Farrow & Ball Yellow Ground

David recently redecorated Sarah’s lovely sitting room in Herne Hill, and she was kind enough to send a brief message about her experience.

The colour Sarah chose for the walls was Yellow Ground by Farrow & Ball.

Dear Graeme,

This is just to say that David did a splendid job on my front room — beautifully painted and no mess. The only thing is that the hall and stairs now look rather tired and shabby…

Best wishes,
Sarah

Trim Colour Series, no.5: Craig & Rose Morris Blue

A note on our progress in a recently-plastered living room, in East Dulwich.

This is a lovely colour from Craig & Rose called Morris Blue — we had it matched in Johnstone’s Flat Matt.

Our client commented that the Craig & Rose original (used in a previous property) “has a lovely but completely impractical chalky finish” — the Flat Matt is the perfect compromise, offering a dead flat finish and good resilience.

Trim Colour Series, No.4: Farrow & Ball Studio Green

Studio Green from Farrow & Ball is rich, dramatic and grand, and is perfectly suited to the raised ground floor entrance to this large double-fronted house.

The first photo shows the initial removal of holes, dings and surface damage, the second shows the door after two coats of Gras a Lacquer from Toupret. Similar to the product known as “Swedish putty”, Gras a Lacquer is an oil-based high gloss surfacer which “sands to a glass-smooth finish”. You won’t find it in B&Q, but it’s exquisite stuff, well worth tracking down.

A similar alternative, which we have yet to try, is the evocatively named Kodrin Spachtel from Sikkens.

Trim Colour Series, no.2: F&B Drawing Room Blue

The owners of this house, in a distinctive and peaceful part of Greenwich, suspect that their front door has been blue for over a century. This continuity — which also applies to the red, green and black front doors nearby — has been lightly enforced.

UV damage to the existing paintwork had dulled and lightened it — the new colour is Drawing Room Blue by Farrow & Ball, and works beautifully.
